In the Footsteps of Goethe and Beethoven: A Summer’s Day at Bořeň in Northern Bohemia

My blog kicks off with hiking, an outdoor swimming pool and a bit of celebrity: we’re off to Bílina/Bilin in the north of the Czech Republic, not far from Dresden or Prague.

Bořeň (German: Borschen), also known as the ‘Bílina Lion’ because of its distinctive shape, offers magnificent views of the Louny Mountains, the Central Bohemian Uplands and the Ore Mountains, as well as open-cast lignite mines and power stations.

Alexander von Humboldt was here. Goethe came over from the nearby spa town of Teplitz with Beethoven.
